This matters for more than just appearance. Faded hi-vis can fail to meet EN ISO 20471 visibility standards, which means a jacket or t-shirt that looked compliant when you bought it might not actually be protecting you anymore.
Why Hi-Vis Fades: The Real Causes
1. Cheap Dye and Fabric Quality
The biggest factor by far is the base quality of the fabric and dye used. Budget hi-vis garments often use lower-grade fluorescent dyes that aren't designed to withstand repeated washing, UV exposure, or abrasion. These dyes sit more on the surface of the fibre rather than binding into it, which means they wash and rub off far faster than higher-grade alternatives.
This is often why two hi-vis garments can look identical on the day you buy them, but one is noticeably duller within weeks while the other holds its colour for a full season or longer.
2. Washing at the Wrong Temperature
Hi-vis fluorescent dyes are more heat-sensitive than standard fabric dyes. Washing at high temperatures — especially anything above 60°C — accelerates colour breakdown significantly. Most hi-vis garments are designed to be washed at 40°C or lower unless specifically labelled otherwise.

3. Tumble Drying and Direct Heat

5. Harsh Detergents and Fabric Softener

How to Stop It Happening
Wash Cold, Skip the Softener
Stick to 30-40°C washes and avoid fabric softener entirely. If you need extra freshness, use a small amount of standard detergent rather than adding softener — it won't affect the dye or reflective tape.
Air Dry Instead of Tumble Drying
Where possible, air dry hi-vis garments rather than tumble drying. It takes longer, but it significantly extends the life of both the fluorescent colour and the reflective tape adhesive.
Store It Out of Direct Sunlight
Keep hi-vis in a bag, locker, or the back of a van rather than hanging in direct sun when not in use. This sounds minor, but consistent UV exposure between shifts adds up over months.
Buy Better Fabric From the Start
This is the factor most people overlook — no amount of careful washing fully compensates for low-grade dye and fabric to begin with. Garments made with proper fluorescent-grade fabric, designed and tested to EN ISO 20471 standards, are built to resist fading for far longer under normal wear and washing conditions than budget alternatives.
Check the Tape Separately From the Fabric
Fading isn't only about the base fabric colour — reflective tape can degrade independently. Heat-applied tape tends to hold its reflectivity and adhesion far longer than sewn or glued tape, which is worth checking at the point of purchase rather than after it's already started peeling or dulling.
